Selling Resources Online
How to Sell ABA Materials Online: A BCBA's Guide to Passive Income
If you have spent any time as a BCBA, RBT, or special education professional, you have almost certainly built a folder full of data sheets, BIP templates, parent handouts, and visual supports that you created from scratch because nothing available commercially quite fit what your clients needed. That folder is a business. This guide explains how to turn the materials you have already made into a consistent source of passive income by selling digital downloads to the thousands of other practitioners who need exactly what you have.
Why BCBAs Are Sitting on a Goldmine
The ABA field has a materials problem. There are roughly 60,000 board-certified behavior analysts in the United States and tens of thousands more RBTs, BCaBAs, and special educators working in ABA-adjacent roles. Every one of them needs data collection systems, behavior intervention templates, visual supports, parent training handouts, and session planning tools. The commercially available options are either too generic, too expensive for individual practitioners, or locked inside expensive therapy software platforms.
The result is that skilled practitioners spend hours every week reinventing the wheel, creating materials from scratch because the existing options do not fit. And when they create something that works, they typically share it with a few colleagues and move on. The materials disappear into a shared drive, never reaching the thousands of other clinicians who would benefit from them.
What makes ABA materials valuable as a product is specificity. A frequency data sheet designed for trial-by-trial DTT programs is more valuable to a BCBA than a generic frequency sheet. A BIP template that follows the specific formatting required by most school districts in the Northeast is more valuable than a generic BIP outline. Your expertise allows you to build materials with that level of specificity, and that specificity is exactly what buyers are searching for.
The economics are straightforward: you build a material once and sell it indefinitely. A well-made data sheet that sells for $4 and gets 20 downloads per month generates $80 per month from a single product. A BIP template that sells for $12 and gets 15 downloads per month generates $180 per month. A bundle of 10 related materials priced at $29 needs only 5 downloads per month to generate $145. That is real income from work you have already done.
What Sells Best
Not all ABA materials are equally in demand. Understanding what buyers are actually searching for helps you prioritize what to create and list first. Based on search volume and marketplace behavior, these categories consistently perform well.
Data Sheets
Frequency, duration, interval, trial-by-trial, ABC data forms, and behavior tracking sheets are among the highest-volume search categories. Buyers want sheets for specific behaviors (elopement, aggression, self-injury), specific recording methods, and specific formats (printable, editable Google Doc, Excel). The more specific your data sheet, the more likely it is to show up exactly when someone needs it.
BIP Templates
Behavior Intervention Plan templates are consistently high-value products. BCBAs writing BIPs for school districts often need a format that aligns with district or state requirements. Templates that include all the standard components (operational definition, baseline data section, antecedent strategies, replacement behavior plan, consequence strategies, data collection plan, and fidelity checklist) and are editable are worth more than static PDFs.
Visual Schedules and Supports
Visual schedules, task analysis visual supports, first-then boards, and token boards are perennially popular. These are especially attractive to buyers because making high-quality visual supports from scratch is time-consuming and requires design skill most clinicians do not have. A well-designed set of visual schedule icons or an editable token board can command a strong price point and sell repeatedly.
Parent Handouts and Training Materials
Caregiver-facing materials are a significant and often underserved market. Handouts explaining ABA concepts (reinforcement, prompting, extinction), parent training session plans, home program guides, and plain-language behavior strategies sell well because every BCBA doing parent training needs them and creating clear, accessible caregiver materials is a distinct skill that takes time.
Session Plans and Program Materials
Structured session plans, skill acquisition program templates, NET activity kits, and curriculum scopes for early learner programs are valuable to newer BCBAs and RBTs who are building their clinical toolkit. Skill-specific programs (imitation, manding, tacting, listener responding, self-help skills) that include a task analysis, data collection system, and teaching procedures in one document save significant time.
Where to Sell
You have several options for where to sell digital ABA materials, each with different tradeoffs. The right choice depends on your goals, the size of your existing audience, and how much time you want to spend on marketing versus creating.
Teachers Pay Teachers (TPT) is the largest marketplace for educator-created digital resources. It has massive search volume and a large existing buyer base. The downside for ABA professionals is that TPT's audience is primarily classroom teachers, and ABA-specific content often gets lost in a sea of general education materials. TPT also takes a meaningful commission percentage and has become increasingly competitive.
Etsy has significant search volume for educational materials and digital downloads. Many ABA sellers do find buyers on Etsy, but the discoverability problem is real: your data collection sheet is competing for attention alongside jewelry, home decor, and wedding invitations. Category-specific search on a general marketplace is always noisier than search on a niche platform.
Facebook groups and direct sales can generate initial traction, especially if you already have a following in ABA communities. But this approach does not scale well. You end up managing individual transactions, file delivery, and customer questions manually.
Niche marketplaces like ABA Therapy Resources put your listings in front of an audience that is already looking for exactly what you make. When someone searches for a "preference assessment template" on a platform built for ABA professionals, they are a highly qualified buyer. The signal-to-noise ratio is dramatically better than a general marketplace. For ABA-specific materials, starting with a niche platform that already has the right audience is a significant advantage.

How to Get Started in Under an Hour
Getting your first product listed on ABA Therapy Resources is a straightforward process. Here is what the process looks like from start to first listing.
- Create your account. Go to abatherapyresources.com/seller/onboard and sign up. You will be asked to read and accept the seller agreement, which outlines the platform's content policies and the shared responsibility framework for user-generated materials.
- Connect your Stripe account. ABA Therapy Resources uses Stripe Connect to handle payments. You will be redirected to Stripe's secure onboarding flow to set up your payout account. This is the same payment infrastructure used by major marketplaces, and it handles all the tax document generation (1099-K) automatically.
- Prepare your file. Your product file should be in a format buyers can use immediately: PDF is the most universally accessible, but editable Google Doc links, editable PowerPoint or Keynote files, and Excel spreadsheets are also appropriate depending on the material type. Make sure your file is complete and tested before uploading.
- Write your listing. Your listing needs a title that includes the terms buyers search for, a description that explains exactly what is included and who it is for, and a category selection that places it in the right search context.
- Add a cover image. This is often the single most important factor in whether a browser becomes a buyer. More on this in the next section.
- Set your price and submit. Every new listing starts in pending review. The moderation team reviews listings for content quality, appropriate categorization, and policy compliance before approval. Most listings are reviewed within one business day.
Pricing Your First Product
Pricing digital ABA materials is one of the areas where new sellers most commonly leave money on the table, either by underpricing out of imposter syndrome or by pricing inconsistently across their shop. As a general starting point: simple single-page data sheets typically land in the $3 to $6 range, comprehensive templates with multiple components land in the $8 to $15 range, and full curriculum bundles or complete program packages can command $20 to $50 or more. For a detailed breakdown of how to think about pricing at each product tier, including how to price bundles and when to discount, see our dedicated guide: How to Price Your ABA Resources.
Making Your Listing Stand Out
On any marketplace, the difference between a listing that converts and one that does not often comes down to three things: the cover image, the description, and the category.
Cover images are the first thing a buyer sees, and they form the initial impression before the buyer reads a single word. A clean, professional mockup showing what the actual product pages look like dramatically outperforms a blank cover or a generic clipart image. You do not need graphic design expertise to do this well. Tools like Canva have free templates for product mockups. Show the actual data sheet or template page, not just a decorative title card. Buyers want to see what they are getting.
Descriptions should answer the questions every buyer is asking: What is included? What format is it in? Who is it designed for? What problem does it solve? Write your description the way you would explain the product to a colleague. "This 2-page frequency data sheet is designed for RBTs tracking challenging behaviors across a school day. It includes space for up to 6 target behaviors, a visual graph section for daily tallies, and instructions for calculating rate. Available as a printable PDF and an editable Google Doc." That is more useful than "A great data sheet for ABA therapy!"
Categories and tags determine where your listing appears in search results. Choose the most specific category that fits your product, and use all available tag slots with the terms your buyers actually search for. Think about what problem the buyer is trying to solve and what words they would use to describe it.
Building a Repeat Buyer Base
New sellers often focus entirely on getting their first sale. Experienced sellers focus on getting their fifth, tenth, and twentieth sale from the same buyer. In a niche market like ABA materials, repeat buyers are disproportionately valuable because the pool of potential customers is smaller than in mass-market categories.
The most effective way to build repeat buyers is to offer genuine value before asking for a sale. A well-made free resource, a data sheet or one-page reference guide that solves a real problem, gives buyers a chance to experience your quality and your style without any financial risk. When they find that your free resource is better than what they have been using, they become very likely to pay for the premium versions.
Think about your shop as a curated collection rather than a random assortment. If a buyer purchases your ABC data collection form and it works well for them, they should be able to look at your other listings and immediately see complementary materials they need: a scatterplot form, a behavioral summary sheet, a functional hypothesis template. Building thematic collections means that each new purchase introduces a buyer to several more products they might want.
ABA Therapy Resources also includes a subscriber notification system. Buyers who follow your shop receive notifications when you publish new listings. Building your follower count through consistent quality and responsive customer service compounds over time. Each new product you add reaches an audience that has already demonstrated interest in your work.
Common Mistakes New Sellers Make
- Uploading materials before they are ready. Buyers expect polished, complete products. A data sheet with a typo, a missing column, or formatting that breaks when printed reflects on your professional credibility. Test every file before it goes live. Open the PDF on a phone. Print it and verify the layout works.
- Writing titles that clinicians would use, not titles that buyers search. "Differential Reinforcement of Other Behavior Tracking Form" is accurate but may perform worse in search than "Behavior Reduction Data Sheet for DRO Programs" because of how real buyers phrase their searches. Think like a buyer, not like the researcher who coined the term.
- Setting prices too low and never raising them. Underpricing signals low quality, not good value. A $2 BIP template reads as a template that is not worth much. If you have done the work to create a complete, high-quality BIP, price it like a professional product.
- Publishing one product and waiting to see what happens. A shop with a single listing has no context, no browsing path, and no signal of expertise. Commit to building at least 5 to 10 listings before drawing conclusions about what is working. The shops that do well have invested in depth.
- Ignoring buyer questions and reviews. A buyer who asks a question before purchasing is a highly motivated buyer who just needs one more piece of information. A buyer who leaves a review is giving you free marketing and free feedback. Engage with both.
- Not keeping files updated. The BACB updates the task list. Ethical codes are revised. If you have a product referencing an older version of a document, update it and note the revision. Buyers who see current, maintained materials trust the seller more.
